"great hotel, reasonable rates"
My mother and I recently spent 2 nights in the Charsfield Hotel in Melbourne. This boutique hotel is 5 mins from the city centre and 10 mins from St Kilda by tram (stop right outside) and has everything going for it -old mansion, beautifully refurbished, good restaurant, 24 hour room service, quiet (thick walls, but avoid the rooms near the front as the road is busy and noisy), thick curtains to keep out the light, very friendly and helpful staff and extremely reasonable rates. (we paid $135 Aust for a room with queen size bed and sofa bed). The bathroom was an odd shape (4m x 1m) but it functioned well and was fully tiled and very clean. The restaurant served an a la carte evening meal which was great value -2 courses for $25 including a glass of wine. From the hotel you can walk to the Botanical gardens, Albert Park and the city. We were there for the Australian Open tennis and expected to pay a lot more. This is not really a hotel for kids (very quiet ambience, no swimming pool, although it does have a great snooker room) Look forward to a return visit some time.

"Very pleasant"
Booked this hotel partly on price partly on fact that had smoking rooms, found out on arrival no smoking rooms bit miffed but smoking area at rear of the hotel pleasant and no real grief. Very pleasant receptionist able to give basic directions and info , restaurant not cheap but food very good. Better than the average and if you can get some of their price deals as I did reasonable for a four to five day stay

"Great Stay"
We really enjoyed our time at this hotel. The grounds were beautiful, the staff was very attentive, the rooms were big and clean and the rate per night was cheaper than almost all the hotels in the city. The hotel is a historical house which added a lot of charm to the trip. It was located right outside a tram stop and from there was only a 5-7 minute ride into the city. The hotel provided free high-speed wireless internet, which a lot of other hotels in Melbourne wanted to charge us extra for. We would recommend this to our friends and go back if we are in Melbourne again.
