"Brilliant Renovation"
I recently stayed at The Cosmopolitan Hotel in St Kilda and it is a lovely hotel. I was surprised to see that it was only 2 stars on Trip Advisor, but the manager told me that they just finished renovations four months ago (they're still working on the restaurant, which is not open yet). The hotel is easily a three and half to four star now. I paid AUD $120 through wotif, which is an excellent price for Melbourne and worth every penny.
The rooms are modern and stylish. They include very comfortable beds, nice pillows (not like the usual hotel pillow), new linen and duvets, mini fridge, coffee making facilities, desks (although no internet in the rooms), Foxtel (satellite TV) and curtains that kept all the light out in the morning.
The hotel is located one street back from Acland Street, the main street in St Kilda, and a block from the trams that take you to central Melbourne (don't drive, there's no free parking in the CBD!). The rooms were mostly quiet although you can hear the trams (it didn't keep me awake though) and you could ask for a room that doesn't face the street.
The staff were very friendly and helpful (it was our first time in Melbourne).
There is free off street parking and internet facilities in the lobby.
I will definitely be staying at the Cosmopolitan when I next visit Melbourne (for the Australian Open).
The hotel website is a very good reflection of the hotel: -----
